Straight answers about VA housing grants, choosing a builder and working with White Rhino.

Do I get to choose my builder for a VA housing grant?

Yes. VA lets veterans choose their own builder for SAH and SHA projects and generally asks for at least three bids. We are glad to provide one.

What is the difference between SAH, SHA, TRA and HISA?

SAH and SHA are VA grants for adapting a home for certain service-connected disabilities. SAH is for larger adaptations, and the veteran must own or will own the home. SHA covers a different set of disabilities, and the home may be owned by a family member. TRA helps adapt a family member’s home where an eligible veteran is living temporarily. HISA is a separate VA health care benefit for medically necessary changes, handled through your VA medical center.

Can White Rhino tell me if I qualify?

No. Only VA decides eligibility. You can read about each program and apply at VA.gov (VA.gov).

How much do the grants cover?

VA sets the maximum amounts and updates them each fiscal year. Please check current amounts on VA.gov (VA.gov). HISA is a lifetime benefit; your VA medical center can tell you how much you have available.

What if my project costs more than my grant?

Under VA’s rules, the veteran covers the difference. On SAH projects, the veteran’s own funds are used before grant funds. Your SAH Agent can explain the details for your project.

Is White Rhino part of the VA?

White Rhino LLC is a private, veteran-owned company. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or any government agency. VA alone decides grant eligibility and amounts.

Do you need my medical information?

No. Please don’t send medical records or VA claim numbers through our website. We will talk with you about the features you need, and VA handles eligibility.

Are you licensed, bonded and insured?

Yes. White Rhino LLC holds Oregon Construction Contractors Board license #[[CCB #]].

Where do you work?

The Portland metro area is our main focus, and we serve veterans across Oregon.

Do you work on government projects?

Yes. We offer remodels and renovations, new construction, additions, structural repairs, accessibility modifications and facility maintenance for government agencies and prime contractors. See our Government & VA contracting page for company data.
